Hi Greg,

Sorry for the delay, however here is all I have re images of Charles his father and mother with her 2nd husband Duncan.

Also Charles snr Attestation Papers.

I have photo's of Charles jnr resting place in Dieppe should you want them please just ask if you do.

Charles jnr was born in Bridlington, Yorkshire 1910, shortly after Charles and Emma went to SS Canada, as you can see Charles snr went to war in WW1, along with some other members of the Sawden family, their AP can be found.

Charles jnr parents at some point went their own way and young Charles spent allot of time with his grandmother Ethelinda Hermina Sawden nee Lendis so I was told.

Charles would eventually sign up for WW2 in the SSR and later loose his life at Dieppe, notes of his actions by his comrades can be found on the internet, they speak very highly of him taking a pill box on his own killing a number of German's in his action, so freeing his comrades from an awkward position at the time, due to his heroics he was injured and died later that day on the beach, contrary to a news paper report, find cutting attached.

Charles while over on manoeuvres with the SSR decided to visit his roots in Bridlington Yorkshire, he called to see my mother his cousin and her parents James & Ellen, at the end of his visit he had to be taken to the bus stop, this task fell to my dear late mother Gladys Mary Fudge nee Sawden, she remembered Charles very well and having only met him that one time, calling him a kind and happy young man, little did she know at the time she was the last family member to see him alive.

I'm sorry I can't add anymore to the above, however I'm pleased your going to give Charles some sort of honour on the site, I'm sure he was sadly missing from life and it seems the powers that be failed to recognize a hero on that raid at Dieppe, as far as I know he gave his life for his comrades and the raid, but to remain undecorated to me is disgraceful, I say that not because of who he is but for what he did!!

Many thanks

Garry.

Notes added 23Jul2009

Here is what I have on my 2nd cousin Charles Edward Sawden.

Charles Edward Sawden was born in Bridlington, Yorkshire 1910, shortly after Charles Sawden and Emma his parents emigrated to Consul, South Saskatchewan Canada with some other members of the Sawden family, the Sawden family has been recorded back to the 1600's in Yorkshire, England.

As you can see in the photo below and his Attestation Papers, Charles snr joined the Canadian Army and was sent to war in WW1, other members of the Sawden family also signed to fight for their new adopted nation, their Attestation Papers can also be found if searched for.

Charles jnr parents at some point went their own way with Charles snr at war in WW1, young Charles mother Emma had to find work eventually finding it in Havre, Montana USA, whilst in Havre Emma made a new life for herself meeting her 2nd husband Duncan McLean (see photo) with whom she settled and had a good life with their children.

Young Charles would eventually sign up for the South Saskatchewan Regiment and later lose his life at Dieppe France in 1942, notes of his actions by his comrades can be found on the internet, they speak very highly of him taking a pill box on his own killing a number of German's in his action, so freeing his comrades from a very awkward position at that time, due to his heroics he was later injured and taken back to the beach where he later died contrary to a news paper report, please find cutting below.

I say that not just because of who he is to me (although it helps) and my dear late mother, but for what he did!!

R.I.P dear cousin you are not forgotten.
