Burton Saver, Pte B-43859 - wounded 14-Oct-44 Staartse Heide

The following note was submitted by his son, Dan Saver on 27May2010:

Dear Sir. I have been looking at the SSR site today and did see a casualty list going back to the war years. I did not see my dad on the list.

My Dad Burton Saver was in the 17th Battery, 3LAA Regt. RCA until between Caen and Falaise when he was transferred/seconded or loaned to the SSR 6 pound A/Tank group. He was surrounded and shot through both knees on 13 October, 1944 while with the SSR anti-tank group. This would be near Hoogerheide, Holland. He and whoever was left made the decision to crawl out that night and try to get to safety. Dad crawled through the German lines that night, past German trenches and he said he could hear the Germans talking in low voices and see the ends of their cigarettes light up as they puffed on them. He made it to a ditch near a road and passed out around daybreak just as he heard a vehicle coming. He woke up later in a hospital in Brussels which was also being bombarded he said. He never knew what became of his A/T group friends. Dad died in 1990, Dec. 7th and was wearing his SSR blazer in the end.

Would he not be on your SSR casualty list because he was seconded or loaned out to the SSR?

Sincerely,

Dan Saver, BA.
