Mackie, H. de F. - Provisional-Lieutenant

95th Saskatchewan Rifles

Message received 6Mar2018

Hi, I am hoping you can help me or redirect me to someone who can.

I am doing research on a man named Hugh de Flyton Mackie.

In his personal belongings I found this hat and items seen in the attached photo. I am wondering if they would have belonged to him during his brief time with the 95th Saskatchewan Rifles in 1916?

Thank you, Nancy Josland Dalsin

Hi Greg,

I am a recent volunteer at a place in Vernon called Mackie Lake House in Coldstream, BC. It is a historical home and now a small museum. I have been asked to go through items in drawers and create displays. Research is also what I do. I have also been asked to write a book on the history of the house, which I am working on now. I found the hat and other items in Hugh's wife's drawer. The people that have worked there for a long time had no idea what they were or who they belonged to. They were not aware that Hugh had briefly been in the 95th Saskatchewan Rifles, new information I found recently in genealogy search. I found a jacket today that Is very old and possibly military. I enclose images here. I am still going through items. Even though people have gone through these items before, I am finding things that no one has ever seen before, or perhaps just never thought to research.

A brief history of the Mackies. The house was built in 1910. The Mackie's started up a school in 1914 called Vernon Prepatory School located in Coldstream, BC. In 1940 the Mackies bought the Lake House as a cottage. Around 1945 Hugh Mackie, his wife Grace Mackie and Hugh's brother, Rev. Augustine Mackie retired along with their living son Patrick "Paddy" Mackie. When Hugh and Grace came to Canada from England in 1914 they briefly lived in Regina.

Hugh Mackie (Hugh de Fylton Mackie b. 1882 - d. 1971

Grace Mackie b. 1884 - d. 1978

their son Patrick Mackie b. 1922 - d. 1999

The house was bequeathed to the Mackie Foundation when Patrick "Paddy" passed away.

If you could create an inquiry on the SSR web sit that would be great. I will let you design it. Can you please send me a link when you do.

If you need more information or if I find more items I will let you know.

Thank you so much for getting back to me so quickly. I'm excited to see what transpires from the inquiry.
